Wow, Should I Get Samsung Pixon or Nokia Xpressmusic 5800? Which One?

Further to the short video demo that I uploaded yesterday, here is the point by point analysis of the phone. I hope you enjoy it. 

Phone Hardware

1. Samsung has clearly taken the pole position in the phone-camera category. In a short span of months, Samsung has pushed out her second 8 megapixals (MP) camera – Samsung M8800 PIXON after i8510 INNOV8. Clearly, no other phones except LG perhaps can come close to Samsung in this area. PIXON is the slimmest phone with a 8 megapixals resolution, a record previously held by LG RENOIR KC910 (a successor to LG KC990 VIEWTY). 

2. PIXON is a 3.2 inch touchscreen phone but it’s not the first touchscreen phone launched by Samsung. However unlike OMNIA, M8800 PIXON is not a windows mobile phone. It is also not using Symbian OS which is the OS for INNOV8. Instead, it uses Samsung’s proprietary TouchWiz interface (I’ll touch more about the phone OS and applications in the later section)

3. Let’s talk about the camera feature first since this is the key USP for PIXON. The new PIXON is equipped with the core functions that you will find on any Samsung’s low end point and shoot range camera. PIXON’s camera features include auto-focus, 16x digital zoom (which, to me, is pretty useless if you want a high quality shoot. Optical zoom will be much more important), fast-shutter and face detection. And of course, being a phone, it provides the geo-tagging function and easy uploading via the mobile internet. 

4. It’s natural that that we compare PIXON to LG RENOIR since both have 8MP camera. While I have not tested LG RENOIR, I learnt from third party sources that RENOIR uses Schneider-Kreuznach lens and Xenon flash. PIXON on the other hand uses plastic lens and dual LED flash. In addition, RENOIR has active autofocus whereas PIXON uses passive autofocus. But the report also commented that camera speed-wise, PIXON has an edge over RENOIR and PIXON has a more friendly user-interface. 5. Putting aside the camera feature, I tend to compare this to Nokia XpressMusic 5800 as well. Both are very lightweight (PIXON 121g and Nokia 109g). Both have long battery life with Nokia winning by a slight margin (Samsung has talktime of upto 3 hours and 40 minutes and standby of 290 hours; Nokia has talktime of up to 4 hours and standby of upto 300hours). However, unlike Nokia, Samsung has only 256k colors. Nokia 5800 by contrast, supports 16m colors. 

6. Some other similar features are the accelerometer sensor for auto-rotate and full virtual Qwerty keyboard and built-in GPS. PIXON uses Google Maps whereas Nokia has its own Nokia MAPS (which requires a subscription). However, Google maps is free and to me Google maps serves my purpose as I don’t need a turn by turn voice navigation.

7. Samsung PIXON also uses a resistive screen and as mentioned in my earlier post on Nokia XpressMusic 5800, I am not very used to the “touch” on resistive screen. It requires you to exert pressure on the screen to scroll down. It requires more deliberate efforts to scroll than the multi-touch capacitive screen on iPhone. 

8. PIXON uses proprietary headset jack. But all is not lost. You are able to connect a 3.5mm normal earphone to the connector provided by Samsung. The only thing is you can’t afford to lose this connector. In addition, the phone also has the ability to do TV out. You have to purchase the accessories separately. 

9. PIXON has an internal storage of 200M (much larger than Nokia 5800′s) and similar to most phones today it has an expandable memory slot using microSD card.  

10. In terms of its speakers’ quality, Samsung included its own SRS (surround sound system). By comparison, I feel that Nokia 5800 is a cut above Samsung when I play the same song using the speakers. The music player also boosts some presets (in total 8 of them). However, unlike Nokia’s XpressMusic, you can’t change the presets to customise your own. (More about this in the later section)

11. While PIXON has a 3.2 inch screen, its browser is not friendly. You can’t open several tabs at one go. And because it has resistive screen, it is not using to navigate with fingers as you need to press against the screen as you move around on a web page. But what I like about the phone is that you can zoom in and out by using the volume up/down button or to use the virtual buttons on the screen. Both are easy to control. I don’t’ encourage you to buy the phone if you intend to browse a lot. Besides the less-friendly browser and browsing capability, PIXON does NOT support WiFi. WiFi is important for me because I tend to put my phone on WiFi when I’m at home or in the office so that I don’t have to pay for cellular data charges. PIXON is not the right phone for web-browsing. iPhone or G1 are clearly far better choices. 

12. Last but not least, PIXON has several physical buttons to provide one-click access. It has 3 buttons at the bottom of the screen. The left and right buttons are self-explanatory (making and ending calls / power switch). The middle button is NOT a home or menu button. Rather it is a “Back” button. I had thought it would be easier to have a Menu button but Samsung has designed the Menu button as a virtual button (read on to find out). On one side of the phones are the camera button and the volume buttons (which can act as zoom in/out and and scroll up /down depending on the application that you are running). On the other side of the phone are the hold button and a menu button that provides a virtual menu for quick access to “call”, “music player”, “messages”, “browser”, “main menu” and back. 

Phone OS and Applications

1. As mentioned earlier, the phone uses TouchWiz OS. It has several widgets on the home screen that you can pull out from the side of the screen to the main screen. Some neat widgets include Google Search, Weather Channel, Favourite Contacts, Photo Album, Music Player and others that are already pre-installed on the phone and many more that can be downloaded from Samsung FunClub website. 

2. Pixon’s organizer application comes with some handy tools such as Calendar, Memo, Task, World Clock, Calculator and Converter. 

3. For the music player, the interface is very friendly and easy to use. You can set any piece as voice or video call ringtone or caller ringtone. You have the option to decide whether to allow background music playing. It has an additional feature similar to the Shazam. PIXON has this application called the “Music Recognition”. It will try to identify the song that you are playing. I have not tried out too many songs (in fact, only a few), hence it’s not fair for me to comment on the accuracy. So far it recognizes most of the songs I bought from iTunes. Between the two phones, I’ll recommend Nokia XpressMusic 5800 over Samsung PIXON for music not just because Nokia 5800 has better music player features and speakers but also because Nokia is targeting squarely at the iTunes market with the music store via its Come with Music service.

4. Nowadays most phones have both music and video players. Given the 3.2 inch screen size, it’s comfortable to play a video or movie on it. What’s neat about the video player is that you can choose to upload to web or to send via email/MMS or Bluetooth (same for music) and even add tags to it (only for videos). You can view the video in either portrait or landscape mode. 

5. In addition, PIXON has this Video Editor application that allows you to insert one video track and two audio tracks. You can choose 176×144 or 320×240 for the resolution settings. You can choose from 5 different effects (Emboss, Black&White, Sepia, Solarise, Sharpen) to apply on the video. Interesting tool for you to make your own little impromptu video.   

6. Just to also mention that the phone has a voice recorder application but it can only record up to a maximum of 60 minutes. I thought if Samsung really wanted this to be a “fun phone” for photo-taking and video editing, it should perhaps include some effects to make some tweaks to the voice. What you can do for video editing is only to trim the length.

7. Don’t bang on this phone too much for games. PIXON has some pre-installed games (mostly for trial only). It doesn’t have the depth and breadth of an iPhone appstore.   

9. The phone can be used easily for mass storage. It has a Documents Viewer application that allows you to open Microsoft Office (only 2003 and not 2007) documents. This is a pleasant surprise to me. I have tested it out on a few powerpoint files (since I tend to deal a lot with powerpoint files). You can view in portrait or landscape mode. And more surprisingly it has a Search Function. This means I can go to certain particular slide easily if I can remember the keywords in that slide. The viewer has a zoom function too.  

10. Okay, I just want to say that this phone is not cut out to support heavy duty email. Of course, PIXON is never provided for that. It can support POP3 or IMAP. I have tried setting up using IMAP. I realised that it seems slow in processing my emails. There is also a limit on the size of the file that you can download. Only up to 5Mb. Most powerpoint file that I receive tends to be bigger than 5Mb. So this is practically of no use to me. If you just want simple text reading, this phone serves the purpose. If you read my earlier post on Nokia 5800, I mentioned that Nokia 5800 supports Mail For Exchange which allows synchronisation of Inbox, Calendar and Tasks. For PIXON, only basic email function is supported. 

11. What I find strange is that Samsung includes ShoZu for MobileBlog (which also allows you to upload your photo to ShoZu). I thought it would be more useful to include a Flickr or Facebook application since this is primary a camera phone. But then again, Samsung may want to encourage people to do micro-blogging and hence ShoZu application will fit the bill. 

12. PIXON has a Photo Album application that uses its built-in accelerometer sensor. Not only does it auto-rotate the screen when you change the orientation of the phone, it also allows you to advance back and forth easily by tilting the phone. Cool way to view hundreds of photos quickly. 

13. There is another neat thing I like about this phone. At times, we may send a sms to the wrong party. This phone has this “precautionary” feature built in by requiring you to click the “Done” virtual button so that you can preview your entire message again before sending out. In addition, when you type your message, the textbox is enlarged so that you can view your draft message easily. You can choose to use the normal phone keypad or handwritten (using the stylus) mode or the virtual Qwerty keyboard.  However, I somehow feel that it is a little slower than most phones in sending out the messages. Not sure if it’s because it has the dialog box that shows “Sending” and hence the perception that it’s taking a bit longer. 

14. Lastly, I just want to say that this phone supports RSS. This means you can import your favourite feeds into the phone easily. That’s something I must have for all phones. Feeds are my daily needs. 

So in summary, I would say that if you are looking for a phone that can double up as a proper camera and have decent music and video players. This is the phone to go for. It has long battery life. This is important for taking photos and playing videos. Plus with the light weight, I really won’t mind carrying one more gadget with me.

I was looking for a new TV purchase for months and came back and fourth between the series-8000 Samsung LED and plasma. After reading reviews and Regulation at my local shop for the plasma sample and a more accurate picture is better in 3D, so I bought the plasma. I could not be happier! The picture quality is excellent on the right edge of the box. After adjustment agouti is the best I have ever seen! Even my wife noticed a difference with our old Samsung DLP. I also found that the plasma is much cheaper than light. Internet access is easy and all you see how big it is in the background while you weather, news, sports, etc. I like it. You will not regret this purchase! 

I’ve seen people complain about the sending of CEVA. I had problems with them. I ordered the TV on a Tuesday and the TV was delievered next Tuesday! CEVA contributed to and made sure all worked well. The whole process was great.

The TV to buy in 2010

I’ve been looking to purchase a new TV for months and went back and fourth between the Samsung 8,000 series LED and Plasma. After reading reviews and comparing at my local store the Plasma displays a more accurate picture and is better at 3D, so I purchased the Plasma. I couldn’t be happier! The picture quality is outstanding right out of the box. After calibrating it, its the best picure I have ever seen! Even my wife noticed a big difference from our old Samsung DLP. I also liked that the Plasma is much cheaper then the LED. Connecting it to the internet is easy and its great how whatever you are watching stays in the background while you check weather, news, sports, etc. Love it. You won’t be sorry with this purchase! 

I’ve seen people complain about CEVA shipping. I had no problems with them at all. I ordered the TV on a Tuesday and the TV was delievered the following Tuesday! CEVA helped me set it up and made sure everything worked properly. The whole process was great.

caveat – just moved in and have only hooked it all up and watched for about a couple hours… 

I literally spent about 4 months going through all the different reviews on different sites. I knew that I wanted a 55″ or plus tv. I wanted the best HD quality I could find. 

I initially was going to go with the highest rated 2009 samsung but had heard a great deal about a buzzing issue (PN55860?). It scared me off. I then switched and decided on Panasonic. I then found out that they have issues with not maintaining the blacks and that “graying” occurred after so many hours. I checked that one of the list. Next up was the LG and I nearly pulled the trigger on the LG LE8500 despite how pricey it was. I still have no criticism of that tv, but I found this one and was able to get what I hoped would be as much or more t.v. for the price. 

I did not care about having 3d, but thought it would be pretty cool to have it anyway. I bought the bundle through Amazon which included the 3d blue ray player and 3d kit. I have not yet checked out the 3d so I am not able to comment as to the 3d technology. 

I have seen the picture and it is lights out incredible. I have to say that the room it is in has a great deal of outside light and it doesnt adversely effect my viewing. It looks great on our wall as well. I can hear no buzzing that is emitting from the tv at all. I may not be as acutely aware of those hard to hear sounds, but I hear nothing. 

I probably would be frustrated that the tv is not wireless ready out of the box (you have to buy a usb connector), but that is a non-issue since the blue ray player is wirelessly connected to the internet. This is particularly awesome given the great things that come with (especially pandora…great for when you are working around the house and just want a playlist to go). 

I was also happy with the freight company that Amazon hired to have deliver the tv. They brought it in, assembled what was needed and then ran a full check on the tv to ensure that it was working and fine. 

The tv is thin. I dont know how to convey how truly thin it is. I also like that Samsung was smart enough to make the HDMI outlets on the side and that area recessed so that I could flush mount it to the wall without the tv sticking out (which I did and purchased a peerless flush mount through Amazon as well). I couldnt be happier with the way this worked out. 

This entire unit is driven by a newly purchased yamaha reciever with surround sound that has this setup sounding absolutely epic at this point. 

I have to say, although I just moved in and have barely had a chance to really sit down and relax to enjoy a full length player or even the 3d, I am extremely satisfied with this product. 

I hope this helps others like myself that have been concerned with spending this much money on a product you fully hope you will be satisfied with. Good luck and hope your luck is as good as mine.

brilliant TV with flaws
Let me tell you first that I personally bought UN55C8000 2 weeks ago. 

The movies I tried on the TV were: 
Nemo (DVD format; 2D mode) 
Legion (DVD format; 2D mode) 
Aliens vs Monsters (3D mode) 
Avatar (Blu-Ray format; 2D and converted to 3D mode) 

I changed the playing format on the TV to “Dynamic” mode before playing Avatar. I swear the colors I saw in Cinemark theatre weren’t half as good as they look on this TV. Magnificent!! Awesome!! 

I also tried to watch the same movie in 3D mode. The depth of the upconverted 3D mode was only partially good as compared to the actual 3D movie you would watch with 3D glasses. This TV lose one star because of this. 

Another star was lost because of the poor double-edging (crosstalk of images) of the some of the scenes in the movie (Aliens vs Monsters) when you watch it in 3D mode. People say it happens occasionally, some people said “it is rare”. Let me tell you that it happens almost all the times when the background in the picture is dark and the object is bright and glowing in it. Example: The planet in the sky before it breaks or the calendar behind the guy who is laying with a ping-pong ball or the inside view of the church. 90% of the movie is bright so we don’t see double-edging 90% of the times. 

God forbids, if we get “Lord of the Rings” in 3D format someday in future, you will see double-edging (or crosstalk) 60% of the time as the movie will have quite a dark scenes in it. I spoke with Samsung and the guy advised me to install the latest upgrade to the TV, which I did but it didn’t fix the issue. 

And when I have spent the maximum dollars (00) for this technology, I don’t want to compromise with the quality of it. 

I also played Nemo in 2D mode and the under-the-sea dark scenes had cloudy edges around the objects in it (such as Dory or Nemo’s dad). 

One more thing: I tried to play the blu-ray movie from my laptop and hooked my laptop to the TV through the Denon receiver. The movie on TV looked normal whereas on laptop it is ultra sharp and clear. And I know it is not the Denon receiver. Anyway, this did not bother me as much as crosstalk issues while watching 3D content. 

TV in 3D mode loses color if you take 2 steps to the right or left. So, it asks you to remain seated in Love Seat. If you sit on a chair besides you or another sofa on the side, you won’t see half the colors. But this is expected. “Angle Viewing” is usually narrow in LCDs as compared to Plasma. However, 2D mode has larger angle view than 3D. But then, you don’t dance around when you are watching 3D movies. 

Other than this, the aesthetics are awesome!! 

Honestly speaking, unless Samsung provides a solution to eliminate crosstalk/double-edging completely, this TV does not deserve more than 3 stars.

So Far, So Good–No, Great!
If you’re like me, you read several reviews to get a feel for the product. My two cents are to help those like me that were on the fence for about two months and then finally decided to pull the trigger. My first thing to do is to tell you what I upgraded from- a Panasonic 55″ HDTV rear projection (no hdmi ports) with a Panasonic progressive scan dvd player. My first impressions after a week of watching satellite tv, blue-ray dvd, and 3D is–WOW! I bought this tv, the 3D blue ray player, the starter kit (included in my purchase at no charge), a wireless adapter for the tv, and two hdmi cables. Purchased everything through Amazon rather than a retail store for (a) a better price by 0 over BB, and (b) to save the sales tax of over 0 to get a new entertainment shelf/bracket unit. First thing on my mind is if you get this setup get the hdmi cables because none are included with the tv or the blue ray player. I’m also glad I got the wireless adapter because it’s much cleaner and easier to access the internet content. The 3D content is what we’re all paying for so I’ll start with that. First, I’m glad that DirecTV includes four 3D channels at no charge, and the system recognizes the tv is able to run 3D so it adds the channels when you add them to your guide. Second, I find myself using the 3D effect for regular programming to give HD shows added depth and dimension. True 3D content is thin right now, but I’m getting great enjoyment watching Lord Of The Rings (my standard dvd extended versions)in 3D with the upconverter on the tv. True 3D content pops off the screen, and upconverted television programs and non-blue ray movies get a feeling of depth and background dimension. Regular HD picture is beautiful. The blue ray picture is incredible. As far as the internet apps, I use Netflix to stream movies and Pandora for music. The Netflix picture was not impressive but I had to upgrade my internet speed to get a better quality picture (not the TV’s fault). I was worried about having these items shipped but had no problems. The tv was delivered by a local shipper and was checked for damage and was powered up before they left. Everything programmed easily (no geek squad necessary), and tweaked settings to my personal preferences over the next few days. Everything is working flawlessly thusfar. Bottom line for me is if 3D becomes the next frontier of in-home entertainment, I am ready, and if 3D doesn’t pan out, I still have an HD tv with internet apps, beautiful picture and sound, and awesome blue ray viewing, with the added benefit of giving a 3D-like look to any movie or program. My suggestion is to read up on proper setup and optimal viewing distance, it will help you have a better experience.

“Glad we bought it” 2010-04-28

We bought this TV via Amazon during Christmas. Now, after four months of ownership, I can say with full authority that we are glad we own it. I note with satisfaction that the price is currently more than we paid, indicating that the market has spoken in agreement with us. 

I studied the market a long time before choosing the Samsung UN55B8500. I almost bought us a Panasonic Kuro plasma, based on expert opinions that the Kuro had the best picture. While that may be true, the image quality of the 8500 is close to the Kuro, and every other quality is far superior. The thin panel and clean design make this TV fit into our clean, modern living room with ease. I mounted it on a wall and hid the wires/cables inside the wall. It is beautiful! It is as flush with the wall as our original paintings which surround it. There are times when I leave an original photograph or set of photos running on a disk in our Oppo bluray player, letting this display become a work of art. 

The diminishing contrast off center is much less than some reviews have made it seem. To us, it is a non-issue, and we watch this TV from all over the place, even far off center. 

We have had no issues at all with anything. 

The sound is good, and we use the TVs own speakers. I am an audiophile, and I have a very special, high-end sound system in the same room, but it is for music only, and it is not suited to TV hookup. I would be the first person to complain if the sound from the TV was not good enough for television viewing. Movie sound is okay too, but I really should connect something to fill it out. My point here is to let you know the sound is fine, not something to complain about. 

The only thing I would have Samsung change is the glossiness of the frame. This design would look better with a flat or satin finish. The glossy viewing screen is not the problem. It is just the surrounding frame that accentuates every little wave in the finish when reflecting light off-axis. This is an obvious design flaw which a good design department should have stopped early in the process. I am surprised Samsung allows this the get out the door. It does not do justice to what is now inarguably one of the best consumer television sets made so far. 

Five stars for a magnificent product, and by the way, buying it through Amazon was the best way to go.

I have no regrets although 3d capability would have been convenient. If you don’t have one, get one now before they are hard to find. None of the 2010 models seem to match this one.

I am a firm believer in buying quality, so I held out for the Samsung UN55B8500 for my first flat screen. The picture is the best I have ever seen. Every detail is top notch. The speakers are rear facing but are loud and clear, but I have not wall mounted it yet. 

No regrets. Buy one while you can still find it. The 2010 models are out and starting to flood out the 2009 models in the distribution chain.

I’ve had the Samsung UN55B8500 since back in November and I did a LOT of research on LCD’s before purchasing it. A couple months down the line, this TV still amazes me even after the initial “wow factor” has gone away. The colors are vivid, and the blacks actually turn completely black in a dark room. It’s like the TV isn’t even there. No other LCD on the market has the blacks of this TV, and even Samsung’s new 2010 line will not. They have not announced any local dimming TV’s for this year yet, and unless you really want to be an early adopter of 3D, there is absolutely no reason to get the 2010 models (Unless you want the C9000 for it’s thinness). Picture quality wise, this set is not going to be beat this year, unless Samsung announces another locally dimmed TV. 

Overall, this is just the best LCD ever created. Check the reviews on any site. You will find the same response.

We recently moved and didn’t want to go with another projection system for our home theatre, so compared all available LCD, LED/LCD and Plasma TVs. We found the Samsung 8500 55″ to be the best picture available. In addition, the low profile and on-wall mounting system made this the best choice for us. 

We’ve had the TV for about a month now, and the whole family loves it, and no-one misses the Runco projection system we used to have. Although smaller at 55″ (our Runco screen was 110″), the clarity, brightness (without having to darken the room), appearance, light weight, low power consumption, and thin profile make this our preference by far!
